AMST3423: American Popular Culture

Popular Culture Web Projects

These projects were undertaken by students of Dr. Stacy Takacs' AMST3423 American Popular Culture course in the Fall of 2003. During the semester, we examined the history, social dynamics, and psychological effects of various forms of popular culture. The course was loosely organized around the theme of consumption and included a history consumer amusements (David Nasaw, Going Out), an analysis of fan consumption (Erika Doss, Elvis Culture), a study of American food culture (Eric Schlosser, Fast Food Nation), and an examination of cannibalism as a metaphor in horror film (e.g. Land of the Dead).

This project asked students to apply the concepts and methods learned in these course units to the study of a new and original popular cultural phenomenon. Almost none of the student's had prior web-building experience, so this was trial by fire. The results are quite impressive.
