What makes a band remain popular over time?

Do fan ideals of the band have something to do with the continued success of bands?

During my childhood, my favorite male band of choice was The New Kids On the Block, and the band member I particularly focused on was "Joey". I chose Joey because I thought he was shy, but outgoing once you got to know him and also because he was the closest to my age. Making the chances of us being together more likely.  Although fun for a little girl to imagine, there is one problem with my idea of marrying "Joey" from New Kids On The Block, I did not know him. Publicly known stars, New Kids-Beatles, etc. are subject to be the objects of numerous daydreams such as these. Of course, in retrospect I realize the likelihood of daydreams becoming reality is slim at best. I have nothing but good memories when remembering and reviewing their career.
