The Jerry Springer Show: A Necessary Evil? He’s been identified as the new Satan, a purveyor of trash television, the downfall of American values and, of all things, Mayor of Cincinnati. Beyond these descriptions, Jerry Springer, and his “talk show” The Jerry Springer Show, are tried and true American popular culture icons. The Jerry Springer Show has proved that its star is not fading, having a fourteen-year run and an unwavering and ever-growing fan base. The lurid real-life soap operas of druggie moms, transsexuals and cheating spouses unfold on stage for a ravenous audience daily. Despite
all of this, perhaps Jerry Springer isn’t the social pariah
he’s made out to be. In fact, there are studies that suggest
that there is value to these displays. These studies demonstrate that
The Jerry Springer Show actually functions in society
as a moral compass of sorts. This Web site will analyze the various
facets of the show: the guests, the audience, both on set and at home,
and, of course, the self-proclaimed “Ringmaster” himself,
Jerry Springer. A content analysis of the show will also demonstrate
how society gives messages meaning, and how The Jerry Springer
Show helps society determine and reinforce mainstream moral values.
Finally, late 19th century forms of entertainment, such as vaudeville,
museums and the circus, and will be compared to The Jerry Springer
Show, that will demonstrate a pattern of American popular culture. |
