From the earliest written accounts of sport from Homer's Iliad, athletic competition has been a large part of a people's culture. In Rome , the most intact structure in the entire city is the Coliseum, a place where spectators gathered to take in sporting events (Graham 5). People enjoy participating in leisure activities, and those who do not partake in them, enjoy watching. In present American culture, the obsession with sports has continued with professional teams, organizations and players. Basketball and Football have become increasingly popular, but neither can compare with the historical ambiance of baseball.
Baseball became an extremely popular sport just after the American Civil War. During the late 19th and early 20th century, the game of baseball was the most widely played sport in the country, garnering the title of “ America 's Pastime” (Vacek). “Baseball, as a spectator sport, took off in the early 1900s as major league clubs began to build stadiums” (Nasaw 97). In the future, as technology became more advanced these stadiums would become the focal points of the cities they inhabited as wood and nails were replaced with steel and mortar. Scoreboards that were once numbered slots ran by hand became electronic, then digital. Seats that were once spots on a long wooden plank became individualized metal chairs that promoted comfort.
The baseball stadium has become a place for more than just taking in a game, it has become a place to socialize, and enjoy other attractions as well. |
