This site is
dedicated to the following subject: The globalization of Wal-mart and its
impact on local Oklahoma economies. Since it’s founding in 1962, Wal-mart
has proved itself a force to be reckoned with in the arena of national and
international retail markets (www.walmartstores.com). Wal-mart was recently
names the “best of the best” in the Cannondale Associates’ 2003 PoweRanking
Survey. This is the fifth straight year that Wal-mart
has received this prestigious honor (www.massmarketretailers.com). To be
selected by your peers as the “best of the best” is definitely noteworthy.
After reviewing recent sales figures that the Wal-mart chain is continuously
generating, it would be nearly impossible to argue that Wal-mart doesn’t
deserve this award. However, there are always two sides to a coin and the
Wal-mart Corporation is no exception. Even though Wal-mart has been recording
record-breaking sales since its inception in 1962, there have also been
several complaints about this money-making corporation. Throughout this
site, we hope to investigate the sides of Wal-mart that its executive team
would like to remain hidden, sides that may or may not exist. We also wish
to give credit where credit is due, and will go in depth into the many charitable
deeds that Wal-mart performs annually. Many people question the effect of
Wal-mart on small town America. Is it a main factor in the disappearance
of the “mom and pop” stores that used to comprise the shopping districts
of our rural communities? Is Wal-mart unfairly receiving a bad rap for putting
these shops out of business, shops that may have already been headed towards
bankruptcy? Does Wal-mart really help communities by offering countless
jobs and convenience? These are just a few of the questions we hope to answer.
In essence, we’re going to try to enlighten you to the many facets of the
Wal-mart Corporation: the good, the bad, and the ugly.
